Storage for students

Every June the same problem repeats in Thủ Đức, District 10, District 5 and Gò Vấp: the year ends, the room has to be emptied or the rent paid through the summer, and everything a student owns has to go somewhere for ten weeks. This page is the answer, with the arithmetic done, and the one trick that makes it cheap: share the plan.

The summer problem

A student room in Ho Chi Minh City is rented by the month. The lease does not care that the university year ends in June and starts again in September; the rent is due for July and August whether or not the room is slept in, and the landlord will let it to somebody else if it is not paid. So the choice is to pay a quarter of a year's rent for an empty room, or to clear it and find somewhere for the contents. Dormitory students have the same problem with a shorter deadline: some halls ask for rooms to be cleared or reassigned between years, and a room shared with three other people has no cupboard for a fridge. The contents are not worth a great deal on paper and a great deal in practice: the fridge, the fan, the rice cooker, the desk lamp, the bicycle, the mattress, two boxes of books and clothes, and the laptop stand are two months' allowance to buy again in September.

What a student room comes to

One student's room comes to eight to fourteen box equivalents, which is a Small plan of 12 boxes, sometimes just over. That is where the trick comes in. Three students with a small room each, or one shared flat, do not need three plans. They need one Medium plan of 24 boxes at 2,450,000 VND a month, or a Small if they are travelling light, split three ways. Each item is photographed and coded at collection with the owner's name in the item name, so nobody's fan goes back to the wrong person.

Sharing a plan

The portal was built for businesses that give several people access to one account, and it works just as well for a flat. One person books and owns the plan. The others are invited as team members with their own login; they can see the catalogue, find their own things, and, with the orderer role, request delivery of their own items to their own address. In September the flatmate who moved to District 7 has their fridge delivered there, the two staying in Thủ Đức have theirs delivered to the new room, and the plan closes or carries on with whoever still needs it. Money between flatmates is your business; the plan takes one payment by card, transfer or cash.

Where the campuses are, and what collection costs

Collection is paid once, from 3,300,000 VND for a Small plan one way or 5,100,000 VND with the return included; split three ways, both are less than a month of the rent it saves. The crew collects from the room on a slot you choose, and the 2-day notice matters in June, when everyone books the same week; the form takes bookings up to ninety days ahead, so book in May.

What stays with you

The crew refuses anything illegal, dangerous, perishable or alive, and for a student room that means: the motorbike, because of the fuel; the rice and the instant noodles; the plants on the balcony; the gas canister for the portable stove; loose lithium batteries and power banks. Everything else on the table above goes. Passports, the laptop you will use over the summer, and the one folder of documents you might need at home travel with you; a thing in storage comes back the next day at the earliest to a city address, not to a province.

Longer than a summer

A year abroad on exchange, an internship in another city, a gap between degrees: the same plan runs for as long as you need, month to month, with the 12-month term at 15% off if you know it is a year. The portal works from anywhere with a browser, and an item can be delivered to a family member in the city while you are away. When you are back, the whole plan is returned to the new room on one delivery, or piece by piece if the new room is smaller than the old.
