Choosing a storage company in Ho Chi Minh City

The storage industry here is young, which means the range between a good operator and a bad one is wide. A locked room with a fan is not the same as a monitored, pest-controlled, climate-stable facility with a photo record of everything you handed over. These nine questions separate them.

Key facts

Ask for the answers in writing before booking. A published price list and published terms are the first good sign.
The three that matter most: how is the condition of my things recorded, what protection applies, and who can walk out with them.
A good operator says no to some things: food, fuel, batteries, motorbikes. An operator that takes everything is storing your boxes next to a fire risk.
Both self storage and valet exist here; a company that offers one and disparages the other is selling what it has.

Signs to walk away

No written price list, or a price that changes when you ask about collection.
No photo or inventory at collection. Without one, a damage claim is your word against theirs.
Anyone with the unit number can collect. That is not security; that is a locker.
Fans instead of air-conditioning described as "ventilated". Humidity, not heat, is what damages things here.
"We take anything." Ask what is on the shelf next to yours.
A minimum term of several months with an exit fee.

Signs of a serious operator

Published terms, published prices, a named legal entity and a hotline that answers.
A facility you can ask to see, even if the valet shelving is staff-only.
An account where you can see your things, request them, pay and download invoices without calling anyone.
Business features: roles, VAT invoices, a ledger. An operator that serves large corporate customers has been through procurement and audit questions that a household never asks; that discipline shows in the household service too.
Willingness to say no: to prohibited items, to same-day miracles, to storing what you should throw away.

Comparing quotes

Convert every quote to one number: twelve months of storage plus collection plus the deliveries you realistically expect. A cheap monthly rate with a 1,093,000 VND collection hidden in the small print is not cheap. A per-cubic-metre rate that counts eight boxes to a cubic metre is twice the price of one that counts four. Is the cheapest option ever the right one?

For plastic and metal you would not miss, a dry room at a low rate can be fine. For anything else the cost of one mouldy sofa exceeds the saving.

Should I insist on visiting the facility?

Ask to. A serious operator shows you the entrance, security and receiving area even when the shelving is staff-only.

What if the operator is a partnership, like Tủ Mây with a facility partner?

Ask who your contract is with and who releases your things. Here the contract is with Tu May Company Limited and release is only to you or your authorised person.

Do reviews matter?

Read the ones that mention damage, delays or retrieval; those are the failure modes. Reviews about friendly staff tell you less.
