Fire safety and pest control in storage

In this climate, the two things that actually destroy things in storage are fire and insects. Theft is what everybody asks about and rarely happens; termites are what nobody asks about and happen constantly.

Four questions to ask a facility

  • Are the fire regulations and firefighting procedure posted on site?
  • Is there a no-naked-flame rule, and is it actually enforced?
  • Is pest control on a schedule, or done when somebody notices a problem?
  • Which temperature area do wood and paper go into?

Fire

A proper self-storage building has the fire regulations and the firefighting procedure posted at the entrance to the units, with a no-naked-flame sign. That sounds like paperwork, and it is the clearest single signal separating a building licensed for this from a shed somebody partitioned and let out.

Your side matters too: we do not accept anything illegal, dangerous, perishable or alive. Gas cylinders, fuel, solvents and large power banks are all out. If you are not sure about something, ask before the crew arrives.

Termites, beetles, cockroaches and rodents

This is what actually eats belongings in Vietnam. Termites eat wood and paper. Cockroaches stain fabric and leather. Rodents chew cable and nest in upholstery.

The question worth asking is not "do you have pest control", because everyone says yes. It is whether it runs on a schedule or in response to a problem. Our partner's facilities run it on a schedule.

What you can do yourself, before the box closes

  1. Never pack damp. Moisture is what invites insects, not crumbs.
  2. No food in any box, including dry goods still in date.
  3. Wash and fully dry clothes and bedding first. Sweat marks and food marks are what insects are looking for.
  4. Solid timber gets padded and covered, not sealed. Wood needs to breathe.
  5. Paper belongs in the air-conditioned area, in its own lidded box.

Temperature, and why it belongs on this page

The air-conditioned area holds 23 to 25°C. That is not only about keeping things cool. Lower humidity means mould grows more slowly, and a drier environment is a less attractive one for insects.

For wood, leather, instruments, paper and electronics, the monthly difference between standard and air-conditioned is much smaller than the cost of restoring one damaged piece.

Frequently asked

Is the facility treated for pests on a schedule?

Yes, on the operator's schedule, rather than in response to a problem being spotted.

Will my wooden furniture get termites?

The risk is far lower in the air-conditioned area, because termites need moisture. For solid timber that is the main reason to choose it.

Can I put mothballs or silica packs in the box?

Silica packs yes, and it is a good idea. Mothballs will scent everything in the box and the smell does not fully leave.

Can I store a camping gas canister or aerosols?

No. We do not accept anything illegal, dangerous, perishable or alive, and that group falls inside it.

Store it, get it back when you need it

We come to you, pack, photograph every item and keep it on a secure shelf, standard or air-conditioned. One message brings any of it back.
