How to pack for storage

Most damage in storage does not come from the warehouse. It comes from twenty minutes of preparation that got skipped.

The general rules

1. Completely dry before wrapping. This is the number one mistake here. A little moisture sealed in a box becomes mould in weeks.
2. Small boxes for heavy things, large boxes for light things. A big box of books will burst its base and nobody can lift it anyway.
3. Fill the gaps. Anything that can shift inside a box will knock against whatever is next to it.
4. Label the side, not the top. Once boxes are stacked, the top is invisible.
5. Photograph before wrapping. Or let the crew do it, because that is how you find things again.

Wood and furniture

• Dismantle what comes apart; bag the fittings and log them with the item.
• Bubble wrap on corners and edges, where the knocks happen.
• Breathable covers, not sealed plastic, over solid wood.
• Choose climate control at 23 to 25°C.

Appliances and electronics

• Fridges and washing machines: drain and dry at least 24 hours, door ajar.
• Coil and wrap cables separately, labelled to their device.
• Keep original boxes if you still have them; they remain the best protection.
• Add a desiccant sachet inside the box.

Clothes and textiles

• Wash and dry completely. Never store anything even slightly damp.
• Hang anything delicate or valuable rather than folding it.
• No sealed plastic for wool or leather; they need to breathe.

Books and paper

• Lay books flat rather than upright so the spines do not bend.
• Use smaller boxes than instinct suggests; paper is very heavy.
• Climate control, because paper takes up moisture quickly.

Fragile things

• Wrap each piece individually rather than in groups.
• Stand plates on edge like a dish rack, not stacked flat.
• Fill every gap and label the box clearly.
