Long-term storage in Ho Chi Minh City

Short-term storage is a logistics problem: get the boxes out, get them back. Long-term storage is a preservation problem: the boxes will sit through at least one rainy season, and the person who packed them will be somewhere else when a question comes up. This page is about doing that well.

The short answer

Long term starts at about six months, which is one full rainy season. Twelve months paid together is 15% off, six months 10%.
A year of a Small plan, standard section, paid together: 12,750,000 VND. Medium 24,990,000 VND. Large 49,980,000 VND. Collection is paid once on top.
Anything organic that will sit a year belongs in the air-conditioned section: fabric, leather, paper, wood, mattresses, electronics. Hard goods do not mind standard.
Prepare for the long stay: clean, bone dry, batteries out, appliances drained, nothing sealed in plastic, an inventory you can read in a year.
The portal is the same from Singapore or Hanoi as from District 1: photographs of every item, a delivery request when you are back, a change of plan when you are not.

What long term means here

Ho Chi Minh City has one climate event that matters for stored belongings, the rainy season from May to November, and long-term storage is any plan that spans it. Six months covers one; twelve months covers one and the dry season either side; anything longer is a standing arrangement rather than a project. The pricing follows: 5% off for three months, 10% for six, 15% for twelve, and the plan runs month to month after that until you close it.

The air-conditioned section carries the same 15% for twelve months on its own list price. Collection is one-off: 3,300,000 VND one way for a Small, 5,100,000 VND collection and return; for a year away the two-way plan is the sensible booking, because you will want everything back at once and it costs less than booking the return separately.

Which section for a year

For a few weeks, most things tolerate the standard section. Over a rainy season, the organic items do not: cotton and wool take on a smell that washing does not fully remove, leather blooms, books fox, wood veneer lifts, mattresses grow mould in the foam, and lenses grow fungus. The air-conditioned sections run at 23 to 25°C all year. The practical split for a long stay is: fabric, leather, paper, wood, upholstery and electronics in air-conditioned; tools, kitchen hardware, plastic, metal, sports equipment and dried appliances in standard. A plan can be split across both sections and priced accordingly.

Preparing belongings for a long stay

Clean everything. Food residue, sweat and skin oils are what mould and insects live on. Wash clothes and bedding, wipe furniture, vacuum upholstery, clean shoes.
Dry everything past the point where it feels dry. A day indoors with a fan after line-drying. Leather and wood want a further day.
Batteries out of everything: remotes, torches, toys, clocks, scales, cameras. A leaking cell over a year destroys the device around it. Loose cells stay with you regardless.
Appliances: fridge defrosted and dried with the door taped ajar; washing machine drained and aired; rice cooker and kettle empty and dry. Nothing with water in it.
Wrap in what breathes: cotton, paper, cardboard. Not plastic bags, not cling film, not sealed tubs, for anything organic.
Stuff and support shapes: paper in shoes and bags, mattresses on edge or flat with a breathable cover, pictures in flat boxes on edge.
Silica gel in closed cases: cameras, instruments, watches, the box of cables.
Write the inventory you will need in a year. Our photographs and codes do most of it; add a note on any item with a story: the box with the tax file, the bag with the winter things you will want first.

Managing it from another country

Everything a long-term customer needs to do can be done from the portal. The photographs of every item are there for the day you cannot remember whether the blue lamp went into storage or to your sister. A single item can be requested for delivery to any address in the city, which is how people get the tax file to their accountant or the winter coat to a friend flying out. The plan can be changed, paused or closed. Invoices are in the account and paid by card, transfer or cash. The one thing to do before leaving is check the contact details in the account: a phone number that works abroad and an email you read.

Coming back

Delivery is requested from the portal, 2 days ahead for the standard fee, to whatever address you have on the day: the new flat, a serviced apartment for the first week, a friend's place. If the return date is unknown, leave the plan running; it is month to month and closes when you say. Book the return as soon as the flight is booked, because you will want to be there for it and because the sooner-than-2-days rush fee of 400,000 VND is a poor way to spend the first morning back.

What changes over a year

Cardboard softens slightly in a humid room; it is why we rack rather than stack, and why the standard section suits hard goods.
Rubber and foam age: seals, soles, a yoga mat, the grip on a tool. They are fine for a year, worse for five.
Elastic loses its stretch and clothes will come back one size more relaxed at the waist.
Batteries left in anything are the most common cause of loss in long storage, which is why they are the first item in the preparation list.

Frequently asked

Is there a minimum or maximum term?

Storage runs month to month with no maximum. Discounts apply at three, six and twelve months paid together.

Can I pay for a year at once?

Yes, that is the twelve-month plan at 15% off. Monthly payment is also fine at list price.

What if I need to extend?

Nothing to do; the plan continues month to month after the term until you close it from the portal.

Can someone else collect an item for me while I am abroad?

Yes. Invite them to your account with a role, or request the delivery yourself to their address; every request is logged to the person who made it.

Do you check on items during long storage?

Items are photographed on intake and on every movement, and the facility is pest-controlled on a schedule. Items are not opened during storage, which is why preparation matters.
