Storage during a renovation

Paint dust and sawdust get into everything in the room. It is much cheaper if the things are not in the room.

Renovations here rarely finish on schedule. A three-week plan becomes six, and in the meantime your belongings are either shoved into another room or under a sheet collecting dust anyway.

What to move out

• Wooden furniture and anything upholstered, the two worst dust traps.
• Books, art, instruments.
• Electronics and kitchen equipment.
• Clothes and bedding, all of which you would otherwise have to wash again.

What to keep

What you use daily, and anything the builders can work around. If the work moves room by room, store in stages and book another collection when the next room clears.
